Goal One—LandWatch team saves 84 acres of Lane County forest land
May 8th, 2006 by Jim JustOn Friday the Land Use Board of Appeals remanded Lane County’s rezoning of an 84-acre property from Non-Impacted Forest Land (F1) to Impacted Forest Land (F2). The rezoning of the property, which is located near the community of Dexter, would have allowed for the development of four dwellings. The county had found that the property had been erroneously zoned F1 instead of F2 in 1984, when zoning was instituted throughout Lane County. The F1 zone protects commercial forest lands in large, contiguous ownerships. LUBA agreed with neighbors Merle Brown and Gwen Farnsworth that the county had improperly looked at current conditions rather than 1984 conditions in finding that the property should be zoned F2, and that the county hadn’t adequately explained what it means by “ownerships” in looking at surrounding lands. LandWatch Lane County and Goal One helped prepare and present testimony before the Planning Commission and the Board of Commissioners. Goal One staff attorney Jan Wilson briefed and argued the case at LUBA.
