Politics—it’s about values
September 26th, 2006 by Jim JustGeorge Lakoff says that if we want to change American politics we need to start talking about values and avoid the pitfalls that cause us to lose voters’ hearts and minds. Communicating values matters more than specific policy positions. We have to empathize and connect with people to communicate well. We have to be authentic—believe in what we say. Only then can we build and deserve trust. Lakoff identifies 12 traps that progressives commonly fall into. Keeping out of those traps requires being clear about the vision and then communicating honestly, simply and clearly in keeping with our deepest moral convictions and political principles.
