Cyclone Sidr heads for Bangladesh

November 14th, 2007 by Jim Just

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center just released its latest forecast, and Cyclone Sidr is still a strong Category 4–130 knot winds, or almost 150 miles per hour. The automated Advanced Dvorak Technique says the storm is a Category 5 and still intensifying.

The storm is whipping up waves of 40 feet or more right now – and is headed straight for the low-lying flood plains of the Bangladesh delta region.

Bangladesh is a very low lying country – only 3-7 feet in most parts. The narrowing of the Bay of Bengal at its northern terminus, the shallow sea bed and the fact that water coming down from the rivers Ganges and Brahmaputra cannot escape when the water level rises all contribute to the potential for severe flooding of the Bangladesh coastline when a cyclone hits.
