Nena Lovinger, Board President: Nena took early retirement from the University of Oregon to devote more time to land use interests and to the stewardship of her 40-acre farm near Fall Creek. She is committed to sound land use planning and the protection of farm and forest lands from sprawl. She was a founding member of LandWatch Lane County and serves as LandWatch’s secretary. Past service: board member of and fundraiser for the Oregon Natural Resources Council (ONRC), member of the Lane County Parks Advisory Committee, President of the South University Neighborhood Association (Eugene). She believes that the health and integrity of the natural environment are essential to a viable future.
John Foster John Foster, Vice-President: John earned his BA at Amherst College and did graduate work at the University of Wisconsin. He retired from the CIA and moved to Corvallis 1991. He has been active in the community, testifying at land use hearings on annexations and other development proposals, and participating in updating the Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Code.
Shelley Wetherell Shelley Wetherell, Secretary: Shelley is a founding member and current board member of Friends of Douglas County. She and her husband farm, raising wine grapes, sheep, christmas trees, and timber. She is also a US Postal Service rural letter carrier. Shelley is dedicated to the preservation of agricultural and forest lands for farm and forest uses for future generations. In 2004 she was chosen as 1000 Friends of Oregon Activist of the Year. She has herself argued and won several important farm and forest protection cases before the Land Use Board of Appeals.
Geoffrey Aguirre Geoffrey Aguirre, Treasurer: Geoffrey grew up in Los Angeles, CA, and spent a considerable amount of time in Missoula, MT, where he received his BA and MA. He and his wife finally found their home in Oregon, in 2001. Since beginning college, Geoffrey has been an advocate of the land ethic. During one of his law school summers, he interned with Goal One Coalition and saw the efficacy and necessity of pursuing land use issues in the legal arena, and, more importantly, of galvanizing the public into active citizen participation in government. Geoffrey graduated from the University of Oregon School of Law in 2008.
Linda Anderson Linda Anderson: Linda was born and raised in Portland and spent most summers at the family beach cabin at Beverly Beach north of Newport. She graduated from PSU. She and husband Steve have since lived in Medford, Eureka, Sacramento and Santa Maria, where Linda was employed as a purchaser and planner for both large and small companies. Linda returned to the Oregon Coast in 2001 and purchased a 69 year old home in Charleston. She now spends her spare time on home maintenance, bird watching and driving a sag vehicle for touring bicyclists.
Linda Anderson Cathy Bellavita: Cathy graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Social Welfare and has a Masters Degree in Library Science from Columbia University. After working for Planned Parenthood in California, she moved to Washington DC where she worked for the Congressional Research Service division of the Library of Congress and as the Chief of Research for the Washington Post. She is now a stay at home mom and an active member of Friends of Mt. David, a citizen-based land use organization dedicated to promoting citizen involvement in community planning in Cottage Grove.
Robert Emmons Robert Emmons: Robert retired from the City of Eugene Parks Department to devote more time to land use interests and to the stewardship of 61 acres of farm and forest land in Fall Creek. Community service and group memberships include: Lane County Parks Advisory Committee (chair), Scobert Park Committee, Nearby Nature, Friends of Mt. Pisgah, Friends of Eugene, Oregon Natural Resources Council, 1000 Friends of Oregon, LandWatch Lane County (founding member and current president).
Pam Hardy Pam Hardy: Pam is a Land Use and Environmental Attorney from Bend, Oregon. The majority of her practice time is spent working for public interest organizations such as Goal One and Central Oregon LandWatch. Her work also includes private representation of individuals and neighborhood groups working to protect their community, local open space and wildlife habitat. She graduated from the University of Oregon School of Law in 2006. While at school she was a Sustainable Land Use Fellow and Co-Director for Land Air Water’s Public Interest Environmental Law Conference. She also completed internships with the Land Use Board of Appeals and the Western Environmental Law Center. In addition to traditional land use she tries cases on public lands and NEPA issues. She is hoping to soon expand her practice to include water law as well. Prior to law school Pam was a river guide and educator for organizations such as Four Corners Outdoor School and Canyonlands Field Institute in Moab, Utah.
Tony Hayden Tony Hayden: Tony is a native Oregonian who grew up in the newspaper business in Lebanon, working on his father’s Lebanon Express and other papers as a reporter and photographer. He traveled for nearly twenty years, living all over the world. He presently operates a fine arts gallery and photography studio in Lebanon. He is active in community affairs, and served as president of the Lebanon-Sweet Home Concert Association. He sees no sense in unbridled growth, and is active in Friends of Linn County and Goal One to stop the destruction of farm land, forest land, and our communities. http://www.proaxis.com/~thayden/
Robert Mason Robert Mason: Robert is Professor Emeritus in survey research at Oregon State University, and manages the family grass seed farm outside of Albany. He has been a leader in land use planning issues since the early 1980s, and is a long-time member and supporter of 1000 Friends of Oregon.
ADVISORY BOARD
Tom Bowerman: Tom Bowerman is a fifth generation Oregonian and a graduate of University of Oregon’s School of Architecture. He farms and raises timber while exploring sustainable living practices. Tom founded the McKenzie River Trust.
Mona Linstromberg: Mona is past president of LandWatch Lane County and member of a small but mighty Veneta land use group. She is a fourth generation Oregonian with a BA in political science from the University of Oregon. Long a political and social activist and always an advocate of wise land use, Mona believes that Oregon’s future is in the hands of those who actively participate at all levels - from local right up the food chain.
Tom Lininger: Tom Lininger is a fourth-generation Oregonian, growing up in Ashland and now living in the Eugene area. He has worked as a federal prosecutor and as a county commissioner in Lane County. In August 2003, he stepped down from the Board of County Commissioners to teach law at the University of Oregon.
Bob Stacey: Bob Stacey combines a long history with 1000 Friends of Oregon and leadership service in Oregon and beyond. He worked as one of 1000 Friends’ first staff attorneys from 1975 to 1986, and served on the board of directors from 1996 to 2000. His professional career includes work as Director of the Bureau of Planning for the City of Portland; Senior Policy Advisor on Urban Growth Management to Oregon Governor Barbara Roberts; attorney in private practice representing developers and other clients at the Portland law firm of Ball, Janik LLP; Executive Director of Policy and Planning at Tri-Met (the regional transit agency in the Portland area); and Chief of Staff to Congressman Earl Blumenauer. He is a graduate of Reed College (BA 1972) and the University of Oregon (JD 1975), and was a Loeb Fellow at the Harvard Graduate School of Design for the 2000-2001 academic year.
Dan Thackaberry: Dan, with a BS degree from OSU, is one of the largest sheep farmers in the Willamette Valley. He’s been actively involved in land use since 1989, serving on Linn County and Lebanon planning commissions, and currently serves as a Lebanon City Councilor. Dan is the current Linn County Farm Bureau president, having served on that board for 12 years; is on the board of Linn County Soil & Water Conservation District; is a member of FOLC and has served on the board in the past; and is a member of the Small Woodlands Association. Dan is active in the Democratic party and has been a precinct person for 18 years.
Michael Walker: Mike was raised in Hugo in Josephine County, Oregon. He earned a BS and MS from OSU in natural resources and resource geography. Graduate work included all but a dissertation for a Ph.D in Urban Planning/Resource Geography from University of Oregon and OSU. He is retired to Hugo from federal service with the BLM as a land use planner and environmental protection specialist involved with implementing the National Environmental Policy Act, and participating in the interdisciplinary group think process. Mike’s passion is an informed citizenry and informed decision making in Oregon’s land use planning system, and addressing cumulative impacts relating to the carrying capacity of the land. He is the Education Chair of the Hugo Neighborhood Association & Historical Society and President of NEPA Design Group.

Jim Just Jim Just, executive director: Jim is long-time land use activist and has worked extensively with citizens and citizen organizations throughout Oregon. He was the founder of Friends of Linn County, a local environmental and land use citizen organization. He had a business and management career before moving to Oregon, where he raises sheep, timber, and wine grapes on his farm outside of Lebanon. jim@goal1.org
jan-board-foto-3.jpg Jan Wilson, associate director & staff attorney: Jan is originally from Michigan, where she earned degrees in computer engineering and law, but she chose Oregon as her home more than a decade ago. Active in environmental organizations and progressive politics, she lives in Eugene but hikes trails and runs rivers throughout the state whenever she gets the chance. jan@goal1.org
Lauri Segel Lauri Segel, community planner: Lauri grew up in Miami, Florida, and has lived in Lane County since 1977. Following 5 years of planting trees on logged-over forestlands throughout the Pacific Northwest, Lauri settled down, became a mother, and earned a master’s degree in Community and Regional Planning from the University of Oregon. Her experience and background in working with neighborhood and community groups fits perfectly with Goal One’s efforts to protect Oregon’s farms and forests. lauri@goal1.org
Jason Schreiner Jason Schreiner, outreach and communications director: Jason grew up on a farm in Western Kansas and has been an advocate of sustainable agrifood systems and vibrant local communities most of his life. Before moving to Eugene in 2004 to earn his masters degree in Environmental Studies at the University of Oregon, he managed a 5-acre organic vegetable farm and also worked for the Kansas Rural Center, a non-profit that promotes sustainable agriculture and local foods. He currently volunteers with various local organizations as a public speaker and event planner, and focuses on empowering people with holistic concepts and practical skills for developing local economies in balance with healthy ecosystems. He also serves as an adjunct instructor of environmental ethics at Oregon State University. jason@goal1.org
